Style of Photography
Josef Sudek used a 1894 Kodak Panorama camera that makes a negative 10 x 30 cm, he used this exotic format to make a series of the city of Prague. He would rather have a tonal variation in his prints than fine details. He also used cameras of the 30 x 40 cm print size. He was strongly devoted to portraying the city, along with inanimate objects. He says "I love the life of objects", "when the children go to bed, the objects come to life". He enjoys capturing the "life" of the objects. Because of his disability, he would work with one hand and cradled the camera in his lap to make adjustments, using his teeth if his hand was insufficient. His shoots his pictures in black and white, and his photographs are primarily used for fine art. He also worked for Druztevni Prace for portraits, ads, and reportage. He believes that "..everything around us, dead or alive, in the eyes of a crazy photographer mysteriously takes on many variations, so that a seemingly dead object comes to life through light or by its surroundings.... To capture some of this - I suppose that's lyricism"
